The Story

Early this morning, a mass shooting during Halloween celebrations in downtown Orlando resulted in two fatalities and six injuries. The incident occurred near Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard, where a large crowd had gathered. A 17-year-old suspect, Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

What Happened?

In the early hours of November 1, 2024, downtown Orlando’s Halloween festivities turned tragic when gunfire erupted near Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard. The area, bustling with an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 revelers, became the scene of chaos as shots rang out around 1:07 a.m. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith reported that two individuals were killed, and six others, aged between 19 and 39, sustained injuries and were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition.

The suspect, 17-year-old Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, was apprehended shortly after the incident. Surveillance footage captured Edgar firing into the crowd, causing panic among attendees. Notably, Edgar had a prior arrest for grand theft in 2023. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the shooting and have not ruled out the possibility of charging Edgar as an adult due to the severity of the crime.

The Orlando Police Department had a significant presence in the area, with nearly 100 officers patrolling due to the large crowd. Their swift response was instrumental in apprehending the suspect and preventing further casualties. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the impact of this senseless act of violence.
