The Story

On April 12, 2025, a twin-engine Mitsubishi MU-2B aircraft crashed into a muddy field near Copake, New York, killing all six people on board. The victims included Dr. Michael Groff, a neurosurgeon; Dr. Joy Saini, a urogynecologist; their children, Karenna and Jared Groff; and their children’s partners, James Santoro and Alexia Couyutas Duarte. Karenna was a former MIT soccer player and the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year. The family was traveling to the Catskills for a birthday celebration and Passover. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash, with weather conditions and mechanical issues among the factors being examined.

What Happened?

On the afternoon of April 12, 2025, a Mitsubishi MU-2B-40 aircraft departed from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York, en route to Columbia County Airport in Hudson. Approximately 30 minutes into the flight, the plane crashed into a muddy field near Copake, about 10 miles from its destination. All six individuals on board were killed.

The victims were members of a close-knit family from Massachusetts: Dr. Michael Groff, a neurosurgeon and Harvard Medical School professor; his wife, Dr. Joy Saini, a urogynecologist; their daughter, Karenna Groff, a medical student and former NCAA Woman of the Year; their son, Jared Groff; and their children’s partners, James Santoro and Alexia Couyutas Duarte. The family was traveling to the Catskills to celebrate a birthday and Passover.

According to reports, the pilot had requested a revised approach to the airport and failed to respond to low altitude alerts. The NTSB is investigating the crash, with weather conditions and mechanical issues among the factors being examined. The investigation is expected to take up to two years to complete.
