The Story

San Diego experienced severe flash flooding due to record-breaking rain. The unexpected intensity of the rainfall led to significant disruptions and emergency situations. Rescue operations were conducted to assist those affected by the floods, highlighting the challenges posed by extreme weather events. The event underscores the increasing frequency and impact of such natural disasters, potentially linked to climate change.

What Happened?

The recent flash floods in San Diego, which occurred following a period of torrential rain, caused significant destruction throughout the region. This event marked one of the wettest days in the city’s history over the past 175 years. The National Weather Service recorded 2.75 inches of rainfall in San Diego, a city that usually sees just over two inches in the entire month of January. The intensity of the downpours led to widespread flooding, affecting roadways and residential areas alike.

San Diego Fire-Rescue teams were actively involved in numerous rescue operations. They conducted 24 rescues from the San Diego and Tijuana rivers and helped hundreds of people in homes and cars caught in the floods. Notably, there were over two dozen water rescues performed, along with various vehicle rescues in different neighborhoods. Inflatable boats and rescue boards were utilized to assist residents in escaping the severely flooded areas, particularly around Beta Street and roads in Southcrest.

The flooding impacted a wide range of areas in National City and other parts of the county, causing numerous traffic disruptions due to conditions like mudslides, landslides, and flooded roads. This extreme weather event led to the declaration of an emergency in the city by Mayor Todd Gloria. Additionally, the Red Cross and the city of San Diego established emergency shelters to support residents impacted by the flooding and storm damage.
